19 Of My Personal Favourite Comedy Movies Of The 1980s

The 1980s was a time for materialism, shoulder pads and hideous haircuts and outfits, and the only way people managed to get through it was through laughter.

Hollywood cinema has definitely produced many of the goods out there and thus, I hereby present to you 20 of my favourite comedy films of the past 3 decades.

Airplane! (1980) - Leslie Nielson is funny, this whole spoof on disaster movies is amusing with silliness, puns galore and every cliche about plane disasters.

Ruthless People (1986) - Bette Midler and Danny Devito as the long-suffering couple who hate each other's guts are what makes this cult movie tick from the creators of Airplane!

Spaceballs (1987) - Star Wars parody by comic legend Mel Brooks, featuring Pizza The Hut, Lord Dark Helmet and John Candy playing a human dog, this is funny as heck

Tootsie (1982) - Dustin Hoffman in drag, enough said. But this is one of my all-time favourite movies ever, and also my personal favourite romantic comedy

Trading Places (1983) - great cast including SNL alums Eddie Murphy and Dan Ackroyd, amusing with some great one-liners thrown in

Beverly Hills Cop (1984) - Eddie Murphy breakout role as Detroit cop, Axel Foley and he delivers the goods

Throw Momma From The Train (1987) - I'm not really big on Billy Crystal movies, but this one is a total hoot; it's dark, it's funny and it has some nice surprises in it, directed by Danny Devito who also stars in this one as well.

Big Trouble in Little China - (1986) cult classic from John Carpenter fusing horror with martial arts, comedy, sorcery and action, set in San Francisco's Chinatown

The Survivors (1983) - first Robin Williams comedy movie released back in 1983 and co-starring Walter Matthau, amusing in places, some great one-liners and favourite pre-Good Morning, Vietnam Robin vehicle, with Robin showing off his comedic chops

Wildcats (1986) - amusing American football sporting comedy directed by the same guy who did The Survivors, Michael Ritchie. And for me Goldie Hawn's best performance, undoubtedly.

Adventures in Babysitting (1987) - Chris Columbus comedy debut effort starring a very young Elisabeth Shue and Penelope Ann Miller. Action-packed, amusing, witty, & a great addition to one's comedy collection

Good Morning, Vietnam (1987) - more of dramedy than comedy, this is one of Robin Williams's finest ever movies and roles as disc jockey, Adrian Cronauer

My Lucky Stars (1985) - Hong Kong comedy effort courtesy of Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung, although it is more of a Sammo Hung led effort. Great martial arts scenes coupled with Benny Hill-like humour and silliness.

Overboard (1987) - Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn rom-com with great chemistry from the real-life couple

Coming to America (1988) - Eddie Murphy rom-com with good support from Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones that has some memorable scenes, whilst also showcasing his acting chops

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988) - Robert Zemeckis live- action animated fare. The cast of Looney Tunes is in this offering amongst many other familiar and well known faces from the animated world. Fun movie

48 Hrs (1982) - another Eddie Murphy comedy-based effort and first major onscreen debut, this one has him paired up with Nick Nolte as the cop with Eddie as a con-artist and the pair work together to help nail a criminal

Romancing The Stone (1984) - more on the lines of action-adventure rom-com fusion and great turns by Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner and Danny Devito

Naked Gun (1988) - in the same mode as Airplane! Yet funnier as a police comedy movie compared to most of the Police Academy movies put together. Gags are ridiculous -yet side-splitting, farcical & will put a smile on your face
